Descrizione
“Words against Words is the first book devoted to the analysis of the style of Carlo Michelstaedter’s major work, La Persuasione e la Rettorica; this is a privileged point of view which allows the reader to come to terms with the radical philosophy of La Persuasione in the context of the Italian and Middle-European cultural milieu. In the wake of the recent re-discovery of Carlo Michelstaedter (1887-1910) by the English speaking world, culminating with the publication of the translation of his major work, La Persuasione e la Rettorica (Persuasion and Rhetoric), this book offers the first comprehensive analysis of Michelstaedter’s style, seen as a preferential entry point to interpret his philosophical speculation. In the context of the European “crisis of language”, which would have lead to the most radical poetics and aesthetic theories of the avant-gardes, this book addresses the stylistic ‘oddity’ of Michelstaedter’s work, with ists multilingualism (Italian, ancient Greek, German, dialect of the Veneto region), juxtaposition of genres (academic, parodies, apologues, philosophical dialogues, proverbs), and technical languages (philosophical, mathematical, scientific, colloquial jargons).”
